DIY Toothpaste

As part of my transition to zero waste, I started making my own toothpaste. Toothpaste tubes are not recyclable, so this is an easy way to reduce waste. It is so easy to make and my teeth feel so much cleaner after using it. Because generic toothpaste usually has sucrose in it, I wanted to make a more basic alternative. Yes, this toothpaste takes some getting used to, but I promise it’s worth it because it feels good using something you made yourself and that is not harmful to the planet.

Ingredients:

4 tablespoons coconut oil
2 tablespoons baking soda
40 drops of peppermint oil

Add all ingredients to a small mason jar and stir with a wooden chopstick. Keep at room temperature. The oil will harden or melt depending on the temperature so just keep that in mind. I use a chopstick to apply the paste to my toothbrush, but my mom made a plastic straw into a little scooper.

This is a great DIY gift for the holidays that promotes sustainable gift giving and a good hygiene! What more could you ask for?

If you try it out, I would love to know what you think in the comments:)
